I fell in love with romances when I was 12 years old. And it is a love affair that still brings me happiness more than 30 years later. I have thought long about why romances are my go-to happy place. And I have no profound answer. In the end, I like falling in love vicariously through each new hero and heroine. As many romance lovers, the characters draw me back time and again. I often re-read my favorite books over and over.
PS I Love You
By Barbara Conklin
Bantam Books, 1981
I still remember this book and the way my heart hurt at the climax of this teen romance that changed my life long before YA became the force it is today.
Say You Love Me
By Johanna Lindsey
Avon Books, 1997
I have reread this book 20 times or more and I can still remember this story. The opening scene is one of my favorite ever. Although I have read every Lindsey book written, this is my favorite.
The Wyndham Legacy
By Catherine Coulter
Jove Books, 1994
I love this series so much. From the non-traditional hero and heroine to the great mystery in the series. This is a wonderful book with engaging characters. It inspired me and I started my first historical romance after reading this book. Although I never finished that one, it was when I got the bug.
Heart of the Sea
By Nora Roberts
Berkley Books, 2000
Nora Roberts is my go-to happy place. I have read most of her books and have fallen in love with her heroes time and again while rooting for her heroines. This particular series combines my love for fantasy and romance together. I reread this series over and over as my kids grew up and still love it today.
By Olivia Cunning
This book is an erotic romance that I still can’t read enough. My love of rock stars and erotic romance are paid in full with this series. Myrna is my favorite heroine ever and I cannot lie and say the way Cunning writes sex scenes has made a lasting impact on me. She spurred me to write my first completed book–an erotic romance. That book remains under my bed but it was the birth of my writing career.
by Kristen Ashley
Tack and Tyra are my go-to couple and I love the way Ashley writes this series. This book inspired me to look to barely-legal bikers for my own alpha heroes. I have reread this whole series a few times but this book is by far my favorite.
Hard To Come By
By Laura Kaye
Derek and Emilie’s story has a great overarching suspense plot that spices up these great romances. Derek his a hot hero who isn’t the alpha but the tech geek. He is noble, fierce and lost a leg defending his country and his friends. His sense of humor is wonderful and the romance is hot. I love this book and series. It gave me an idea how to write supporting heroes in a series.
